Making our way back to the mountains of Spain, we spent a brief but wonderful two days in Capileira!
Capileira, a small, quaint town of 600 inhabitants, is nestled in the Spanish mountainside. Our main focus there was climbing Mulhacén, the highest peak in the peninsula! We hiked four hours up to the peak. We definitely were thankful for the bocadillos that we had brought with us for lunch! Then we hiked down the mountain for another three hours. Playing music and playing games in Spanish, we made the most of our seven hours of hiking!
Sore from the incredible Mulhacén hike, the following morning we packed our bags and made our way to another small mountain village called Trevélez. Trevélez is known for its world-renown jamón (cured ham), so it was only fitting that we visited a jamón factory and museum, given the product’s importance nationally. We learned about the role of Spanish jamón on an international scale, the process of making jamón, and its variations across region and style. We finished our visit with a tasting of delicious jamón!
Tuesday we arrived in Nerja, our final destination. The Mediterranean beach town is truly stunning, with white housing embedded in the natural steps of the city and a sparkling ocean. A highlight of our time in Nerja was water-trekking in a nearby river and kayaking in the ocean!
With all of these amazing experiences over the last month, tomorrow we fly back to the U.S. Nunca olvidaremos estas memorias tan lindas!
